Starting a New Life in Malta
1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and where you’re from?
I am from Niš, Serbia. I grew up there and finished my education. Seven years ago, I moved to Malta with a group of friends in search of new opportunities, and over time I’ve grown both personally and professionally. Along the way, I’ve met many amazing people and built a strong network. I’ve always loved cooking and nutrition — I started out working as a chef and food advisor — but eventually transitioned into the iGaming industry because I wanted more flexibility. Now I work as a remote Account Manager, a role I truly enjoy. Outside of work, I love exploring Malta’s hidden spots, spending time in nature, and travelling.
2. What inspired your move to Malta?
Initially, it was for work opportunities – Malta has a thriving gaming industry, and because most of my friends were already here. But once I got here, I fell in love with the island’s atmosphere, the sunshine, the sea, and the mix of cultures. It’s small, but it feels big in terms of opportunities and community.
3. What were your first experiences like when settling in Malta?
I was amazed by how international the community is, so you meet friendly people from all over the world. There’s a generally happy atmosphere here, and that all-year-round touristic vibe lifts your mood. The climate is another big one; having the sea nearby year-round is something I truly value, and I love that you can finish work and, within 20 minutes, be at the beach.
Climbing the Career Ladder in Malta

4. How did you manage to switch careers to the gaming industry?
If you don’t have prior experience, it’s important to start from entry-level roles to learn the industry from the ground up. I began in live casino, and through persistence and dedication, my hard work was recognized with promotions. Eventually, I reached a role I truly love and feel passionate about.
5. What do you enjoy most about working in the gaming sector now?
I appreciate the flexibility the industry offers – it allows me to spend more time with my parents and work remotely from my home country, which means more days off to travel. Additionally, I’m grateful for a supportive team, continuous growth opportunities, and the chance to visit new countries and meet new people regularly.
Integrating into Maltese Life
6. Navigating paperwork and residency — how has your experience with Malta’s bureaucracy been over the years?
The residency process in Malta generally works, but could be more efficient. Sometimes, rule changes aren’t communicated clearly or promptly, which may cause confusion. For example, updates on fees or requirements may appear on the official website, but aren’t always reflected in all documents and forms, making it unclear what exactly has changed. Also, getting timely responses to clarify these questions can be challenging. Overall, clearer communication and more transparency would improve the experience.
7. You’re currently preparing to apply for long-term residence in Malta. How has that process been, especially the Integration Course?
The Integration Course, while time-consuming, was a wonderful experience, especially the Kultura part. The group was full of expats from all over the world, making it fun, interesting, and eye-opening to learn about different cultures and customs. Learning Maltese wasn’t always easy, but it helped me integrate better and feel more welcomed by locals, showing respect and appreciation for the language and country I love.
8. You’re passionate about sports and nature. How have you managed to stay active and keep your hobbies alive in Malta?
Growing up, my parents took me to nature often, and during my teen years, I was part of a scout group, so nature has always been a big part of my life. I’m always on the lookout for new places to reconnect with that feeling and to escape the noise and crowds. Working from home makes it especially important for my physical and mental health to get moving – whether it’s working out, swimming, or taking long walks.
Exploring the World Beyond Malta

9. You mentioned your recent one-month trip to Peru: what inspired it, and what made it special for you?
I’ve always been fascinated by South America, especially Peru, with its mysticism and ancient knowledge, as well as its way of life. I spent a lot of time researching Inca culture, and visiting in person to experience their simplicity, food, and lifestyle was a dream come true. Peru is vast and diverse, but the highlight for me was a four-day mountain trek ending at Machu Picchu, along with the Rainbow Mountain hike. On the other end of the spectrum, exploring the Amazon River and jungle, seeing native animals in their natural habitat, was equally unforgettable.
Perspectives d'avenir
10. Do you see Malta as your long-term home, and what would you say to other non-EU expats, especially Serbians, thinking of making Malta their new home?
Absolutely. There are many opportunities here for personal and professional growth, but if you don’t have experience, be ready to start from the beginning and work hard. Like moving anywhere new, it takes time to build your network and get known, but once you do, things start to flow.
Malta is as good as what you make of it. Patience, honesty, and being genuine are key.
