What’s Going on in Malta and Gozo? October 2026 Edition

10 dates still worth adding to your calendar
October

October changes Malta and Gozo, but certainly not the size of the calendar.

The hottest summer nights may be behind us, yet some of the year’s most distinctive events arrive just as the evenings become cooler. Historic cities are lit by candlelight, international yachts gather in the Grand Harbour, Gozo enters its celebrated opera season, and Malta welcomes young performers from across Europe for Junior Eurovision.

There is also folk music in village squares, family Halloween celebrations and one of Malta’s most atmospheric classical music festivals to close the month.

Since October is already underway, we have skipped the events that have passed and focused entirely on what you can still experience.

⭐ Pick of the Month: Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2026

EUROVISION CONTEST JUNIOR OFFICIAL POSTER

Date: 24 October 2026
Location: MFCC, Ta’ Qali
Entrance: Ticketed

Ten years after Malta last hosted the competition, Junior Eurovision is returning to the island.

Le 24th Junior Eurovision Song Contest will take place at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali on 24 October, bringing young performers representing 16 participating broadcasters to Malta. The venue is being transformed into what organisers describe as a Eurovision Festa Village, combining the scale and production of Eurovision with elements inspired by Malta’s traditional festa culture.

For Malta, this is considerably more than another concert on the October calendar. Junior Eurovision is an international televised event, with performers, delegations and fans arriving from across Europe.

And for anyone who remembers Malta hosting the contest in 2014 and 2016, there is something rather fitting about seeing it return exactly a decade later.

Valletta Waterfront Oktoberfest

235643265342

Date: 7–9 October 2026
Time: From 18:00
Location: Valletta Waterfront
Entrance: Gratuit

Three evenings of music, food and a little Bavarian flavour along the Grand Harbour.

Valletta Waterfront Oktoberfest runs from Wednesday to Friday, bringing live singers, a Bavarian band, buskers, games and evening dance parties to the historic promenade. Entry and entertainment are free, so there is no need to buy an Oktoberfest package simply to attend.

Birgu Fest & Birgu by Candlelight

825351398 1127816369578949 8832969296459356301 n

Date: 9–10 October 2026
Location: Birgu, Vittoriosa
Entrance: Mainly free; some attractions ticketed

Some places hardly need decoration to feel historic. Birgu is one of them. But on the Saturday night of Fête de Birgu, the atmosphere changes completely.

Streets, squares and historic buildings are illuminated by candles and traditional lighting for Birgu by Candlelight, turning one of Malta’s oldest cities into one of the most atmospheric places to spend an October evening. The wider weekend also brings music, performances, food, crafts and cultural activities throughout Vittoriosa.

Heritage Malta is also opening Fort St Angelo and the Inquisitor’s Palace after dark on 10 October. Both sites will be candlelit, with a combined ticket costing just €3 and opening continuing until midnight.

Fjakkolata

Date: 11 October 2026
Time: 18:00–23:00
Location: Għar Ilma, Santa Luċija, Kerċem, Gozo

Gozo has its own answer to the candlelit October evening.

Fjakkolata returns to the countryside around Santa Luċija on 11 October, celebrating Gozitan traditions beneath the glow of fjakkoli, traditional flaming torches. The attraction here is as much about the setting as the programme.

For anyone who thinks Malta and Gozo become quiet once summer finishes, this is a convincing counterargument.

Rolex Middle Sea Race

Entrance: Free to watch

Le 47th edition starts on Saturday 17 October. The offshore course covers approximately 606 nautical miles, taking competitors from Malta towards Sicily, around Stromboli and the Aeolian Islands, past Pantelleria and Lampedusa before returning to Malta.

From the fortifications around La Valette and the Three Cities, spectators can watch an international fleet gather beneath some of the Grand Harbour’s most recognisable landmarks before heading out to sea.

Find a viewpoint around the harbour, arrive before 11:00 and watch one of Malta’s great international sporting traditions begin.

La Traviata at Teatru Aurora

Date: 17 October 2026
Time: 19:30
Location: Teatru tal-Opra Aurora, Victoria, Gozo
Entrance: Ticketed, from €60

October in Gozo means opera.

This year, Teatru Aurora marks the 50th anniversary of its official opening with Verdi’s La Traviata, performed for one night only on 17 October.

The production brings together an international cast led by Zuzana Marková as Violetta Valéry, Rame Lahaj as Alfredo Germont and Dimitris Tiliakos as Giorgio Germont, accompanied by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Colin Attard. The opera is sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Even those who would not normally describe themselves as opera enthusiasts may find that the setting, ceremony and sense of occasion make this one of Gozo’s most distinctive cultural experiences.

Daqqa Folk

Date: 23–25 October 2026
Time: From 20:00
Location: Qala Square, Gozo
Entrance: Gratuit

Qala takes the spotlight later in the month with three nights celebrating traditional music and dance.

Daqqa Folk brings together Gozitan and Maltese folk groups with international performers, including Ireland’s Attridge Academy of Irish Dance. The programme changes each evening, with local groups, live music and a traditional dinner also forming part of the weekend.

There is another practical advantage: performances are being held beneath a large tent in Qala Square, meaning a change in October weather should not spoil the evening.

The Three Palaces

Date: 28 October–1 November 2026
Location: Historic venues around Malta
Entrance: Ticketed

Festivals Malta’s annual classical music festival returns from 28 October to 1 November, presenting concerts in historic surroundings rather than a conventional concert hall. The festival is associated with some of Malta’s most important palace settings and forms the final major festival in Festivals Malta’s 2026 calendar.

It is a format that works particularly well at this time of year. October’s quieter evenings give Malta’s historic interiors a very different character from the packed outdoor festivals of July and August.

Madama Butterfly

572397283 1431615462306543 211289111560014270 n

Date: 29 & 31 October 2026
Time: 19:30
Location: Teatru Astra, Victoria, Gozo
Entrance: Ticketed

Less than two weeks after La Traviata, Gozo’s second major opera house takes its turn. Puccini’s Madama Butterfly returns to Teatru Astra for the first time since 2012, with performances on 29 and 31 October.

Irish soprano Celine Byrne takes the role of Cio-Cio-San, alongside Italian tenor Leonardo Caimi as Pinkerton, Sanja Anastasia as Suzuki and Vladimir Stoyanov as Sharpless.

The story may be more than a century old, but Puccini’s combination of intimacy, tragedy and some of opera’s most recognisable music continues to fill theatres around the world.

Having two major full-scale opera productions within the space of two weeks is also a reminder of something remarkable about Gozo: an island of its size sustains an opera tradition that many considerably larger places would struggle to match.

Halloween in Nadur

carnival in Nadur official poster

Date: 30 October 2026
Time: 17:00–21:00
Location: St Peter & St Paul Square, Nadur, Gozo
Entrance: Gratuit

Nadur is usually associated with another type of costume.

Its famously unconventional February carnival may still be months away, but on 30 October the village square is handing itself over to Halloween.

The family-focused programme includes games, inflatables, pumpkin carving, face painting, crafts and a Haunted Shelter, with scheduled entertainment ranging from a magic show and dance performance to fire spinning and a children’s Halloween music party. Costumes are very much encouraged.

It is free, starts early enough for younger children and offers families a much more substantial evening than simply going door to door for sweets. And given Nadur’s reputation for embracing a costume, it feels like an entirely appropriate place to finish October.

October belongs to a different Malta

Summer gets most of the attention, but October reveals another side of the islands.

The sea is still close, outdoor evenings have not disappeared and the streets are considerably easier to explore without July’s heat. At the same time, the cultural calendar becomes richer: opera returns to Victoria, candles replace fireworks in historic cities, international sailing fills the Grand Harbour and concert halls begin their autumn programmes.

This month also moves unusually easily between the international and the intensely local.

One weekend might take you to a centuries-old street in Birgu lit by candles. Another can put you among Eurovision fans from across Europe. In Gozo, you can move from folk dancing in Qala to Puccini in Victoria within the space of a few days.

So perhaps October is not really the month when Malta’s summer calendar ends.

It is simply when a different one begins.
