What’s Going on in Malta and Gozo? May Edition

A month of outdoor events, local traditions, and unplanned days across Malta and Gozo.
May

May in Malta and Gozo feels open. The days stretch without effort, evenings settle gently into place, and the islands begin to shift outdoors again. It is not a month that rushes. Instead, it spreads out, across village squares, coastal spaces, and events that feel as much about atmosphere as they do about timing.

There is no single centre to May. What defines it is movement, from spring into early summer, from quiet plans into shared evenings, from structure into something more fluid. It is a month that rewards stepping outside, even without a fixed plan.

Festa Season Begins

May marks the quiet beginning of the festa season across both Malta and Gozo, as village squares start to come alive with decorated streets, band marches, and evening celebrations. Early festas appear in localities such as Ħamrun (St Joseph), Santa Venera (St Venera), and in Gozo, Munxar (St Paul Shipwrecked) towards the end of the month.

These early celebrations are smaller and more local, offering a softer introduction to a tradition that gradually builds into the summer, and one that is best experienced by simply stepping into a village and following the atmosphere.

Days That Unfold Naturally

May is best experienced without rushing. It is a month for unplanned days that move easily between Malta and Gozo, where a morning by the sea can turn into a long afternoon and an evening that stays outdoors. From early swims at Ramla Bay or Għajn Tuffieħa to quiet walks along coastal paths and village streets, the rhythm is set by light rather than schedule. With the fast ferry and regular Gozo Channel crossings running more frequently, even last-minute plans between the islands feel simple, allowing the day to take shape as it goes.

A Month That Opens Outward

May does not build towards a single moment. It spreads out, across places, people, and evenings that often begin without much intention.

You might follow music into a square. You might stay longer than planned by the sea. Or you might realise that the best part of the month was never something you scheduled.

Some months fill your calendar. Others simply invite you outside.
